A Military Gentleman part deux!

Well as suggested, last night I settled down in the arm chair with a large glass of malt and started to have a more detailed look at the book.
Have my initial thoughts been dampened? Not likely they have been reinforced.
In preparing this book John has pulled together a team of professionals;-
Bob Marrion who has provided a significant number of illustrations.
Brian Rigelsford  who has illustrated large portions of the book with his wonderful ink drawings.
Tim Hall who wrote up the memoirs.
To name but three.
The book is essentially a telling of the story of Nicolas Welch and is based upon his memoirs the finding of which is a tale in itself.
Of course to follow this interesting tale the book is profusely illustrated with photos from Johns collection and what a collection (sigh).

Hope John doesn't mind but here's two pics to whet your appetite.
My 18th. Century bug is well and truly bitten.
So tonight guess what I will be doing? The malt is ready....

 Now I can say no more except I dont care what Santa brings me now, if anything - nothing can better this.

This book is absolutely worth every single penny, quality, production is first class and the contents, what you want to see? Well you can't at least not just yet.
This is truly a labour of love, crammed full of content and pictures of John's excellent collection this is a book that warrants sitting down in a quiet corner with a large malt whiskey and savoring both the contents of glass and book simultaneously.

When I've had a good look I will post a little more, in the mean time if John has nay left (limited run of 500) I suggest you find a way to treat yourself.

Also I am currently in negotiation to purchase a range of figures, the figures haven't been available for a while and are in a new period for me. They were and still are excellent sculpts and many of the figures were never made available so it could be exciting times. More news to follow!!!!

Don Featherstone

TMP is carrying a report that Don Featherstone has passed away.  Like many Don was an inspiration to me and I still have many of his books on my shelves .
I had the pleasure of playing Talavera with him some years ago with Duncan MacFarlane, Danny Boreham and others using the Eagle Bearer computer rules.
A true gentleman who was extremely entertaining. He will be greatly missed.

Richard contacted me yesterday to say the new figures are all done and on their way!!
These are the new highlanders but check out the Crann Tara blog for pics of the rest.

Web shop etc will be updated over the next few weeks whilst the moulds are made and figures cast stocked etc.

Return from Hols and the Wargames Bucket List

Well having returned from a most enjoyable holiday in Crete pleased to find all my Mags waiting for me on my return.
I'm picking up a growing theme amongst us slighter older gamers, whilst our enthusiasm remains undiminished perhaps reality of our mortality is setting in and whilst we all have too much stuff perhaps we haven't really done much about it. Henry Hyde has a piece in his new mag.

I had started the process before my break and got rid of an awful lot of stuff, more worrying is it didn't seem to create much space!!!
Anyway whilst away i got to thinking and came up with two strands of thought, the first was what periods did I really enjoy playing regardless and that over the years have given me the most enjoyment.
1. Ancients (Rome, Greece, and their enemies)
2. 18th Century (AWI and SYW)
3. Napoleonic
4.WWII
5. Warhammer fantasy (v.old armies in possession)
6. Sci Fi skirmish
and that was about it. All the rest have been fads picked up along the way which effectively stop me playing my favourite periods.

The decision is all the rest will go, some quicker than others and some may be retained because there's not a lot of them e.g. VBCW and AK47

I actually feel better for going through the process, some of the periods eg Napoleonic will be multi scale because of what I want to do eg 6mm Peninsular but 28mm DBN for the rest.

The second part was my 'Bucket List' of games I would like to play before I depart.
1. Waterloo
2.Gettysburg
3.1066 Hastings campaign
4.Alexander The Greats Battles
5.Battles of the 2nd Punic War
6 Arnhem Campaign
7. Blenheim ( already played this with the League of Augsberg chaps some years ago and what a great time I had)

In terms of Gettysburg I dont want to start collecting an painting new armies so I may resort to using paper armies!
I haven't thought about 1066 but 6mm may be a solution?
The rest as the say will hopefully be history one day.
